Whether it is the increased stress of living in today’s world or an increased availability of illegal drugs, it seems that more and more people have turned to drugs. Many of today’s teenagers face a growing reliance on party pills and drugs. A generation of young people has been negatively affected by the increased availability of methamphetamine. Even worse, some people have become addicted to prescription pain medication. The common thread among these groups is a dependency on a drug. What may have started as a recreational habit has become more of a lifestyle.

Those that are struggling with an addiction are often left with two possibilities. On one hand, they can try to break their addiction through rehab or a 12 step programs. On the other, they can choose to stay addicted. Often, the difference is very simple, a good support system.

Recovery from an addictive substance, whatever it is, is always difficult. One approach that shows promise is helping the addict create a better lifestyle. This often means changing everything about their life. Moving away from the places and people who they associate with their drug use is part of it. The lifestyle change also means learning to manage stress, learning to effectively manage life issues, and developing higher self-esteem.

It is ironic that for as much as drug and alcohol abuse is a lifestyle, the same is said of recovery. For those that are strong enough to recognize the difference, a new healthier and better life awaits.

The Benefits of Eating Organic

Official seal of the National Organic Program

More and more people are becoming enlightened about the benefits of eating organic produce. Eating organically is sometimes dismissed by the mainstream as being off-beat. However more and more research evidence points to the benefits of incorporating organic foods into our diet.

The majority of non-organic food on the market today contains many additives and preservatives. Additives are things which make a particular food a certain color, or for it to have a certain flavor or smell. Preservatives are things which will help preserve a particular food so that it will have a longer shelf life.

Most preservatives and additives are synthetic, meaning that they are chemical made in a laboratory. Recent research into the consumption of additives and preservatives and behavioral disorders in children such as ADD/ADHD and autism has shown that there is a connection between the two. Research has also shown that these chemicals may also have a negative effect on a person mood.

The benefits of eating organic produce don’t just stop with the psychological. Many who maintain a diet consisting primarily of organic food claim that it has a positive effect on a person’s skin and hair. There are also claims that eliminating chemical ridden food from the diet will boost a person’s energy levels and help to combat fatigue.

Take a look at some of the packages in your kitchen cupboards. If there are lots of numbers listed in the ingredients then the food is full of chemicals. Most people wouldn’t put chemicals into their bodies, yet they ingest them in many different foods. Try substituting with organic and see if you notice a difference.

Diabetes

Diabetes is a common health condition seen today. It is very prevalent in most of the countries and is a condition where the person with the condition has high blood sugar. The main factor is due to the inability of the body to produce proper amount of insulin or the condition of the cells to be unresponsive to the insulin produced in the body so that the sugar contents taken in are not broken down.

Though diabetes have some classic symptoms which indicate its presence like frequent urination, increased thirst and hunger, these are not the ultimate symptoms and so, don’t get all panicky if you feel one of the symptoms mentioned. High sugar level and the presence of diabetes can only determined by a test and not because you feel hungry and thirsty regularly.

There are mainly three types of diabetes, the diabetes type 1, type 2 and gestational diabetes. The type 1 diabetes is the condition due to which the body cannot produce insulin. The people with this condition would have to take regular insulin through vaccinations or an insulin pump. This type is called juvenile diabetes as it is experienced by children or young people.

The type 2 diabetes is the condition where the cells in the body do not react to the insulin produce, thereby making it useless. This will require you to take medication in some cases, and injection of insulin in others. The treatment depends on the seriousness of the condition. This is usually called adult-onset diabetes as it occurs as one gets older.

Gestational diabetes is seen in pregnant women. During pregnancy they would have problems with the insulin secretion and the responsiveness of the cells to the insulin produced. This problem will be improved or corrected after the delivery of the baby and the person might come back to normal.

Dealing with Menstrual Cramps

Each month, women all over the world suffer from cramps during their cycle. If you deal with menstrual cramps every month, there are things you can do to eliminate them. Medication can help, but it’s not your only option. Here are some other tips that have worked for many women.

  1. Place a heating pad or hot water bottle directly on your belly. For safety, wrap it in a towel, or place it on top of your shirt. Do not place it directly on your skin.
  2. Set up a warm bath. You can add bubbles, soothing salts, or bath beads to make it more relaxing for you.
  3. Lie on your back with a pillow under your knees. This will eliminate pressure on your abdomen and relieve the cramps. You can also try lying on your side and bringing your knees up to your chest. Both of these positions will also offer relief from any back aches you may feel.
  4. If your cramps are in your vaginal area, use pads instead of tampons. Tampons will increase the pressure, and cause the pain to increase.
  5. Exercise. It may be the last thing you want to do when you have cramps, but it should help relieve them and make you feel much better. The endorphins exercise releases will also help any other PMS symptoms you may have.

If these remedies don’t help, try small dose of ibuprofen. If nothing is helping to eliminate your cramps, speak with your doctor. She can determine if your cramps are caused by more than PMS, and make sure you don’t have a significant problem. She can also provide you with a prescription strength pain reliever that may help, if you require one.

Adjusting to a Diabetic Diet

When you’ve been diagnosed with diabetes, a million questions start rushing through your head. One of the main questions will involve your diet. What kind of foods will you be able to eat? Will you be able to eat any sweets at all? Will you have to totally change the way you eat? Will you have to adjust your family’s eating habits and schedule? Adjusting to eating a healthy diabetic diet doesn’t have to be difficult. Simply take things one step at a time.

The goal of a diabetic diet is to maintain your weight by reducing your caloric intake, fat intake, and carbohydrate intake. Your doctor will tell you the amounts you need for your specific needs. Once you have your doctor’s guidelines of how much you need to eat each day, you can begin planning your diet.

Typically, in a diabetic diet, you’ll reduce your daily amount of dietary fat to less than 200 to 300 milligrams per day, eat about six ounces of protein a day, increase your dietary fiber each day, and limit your amount of high calorie low nutritional value foods each day. To make these changes in your diet, you’ll want to use a dietary exchange list when planning your meals. This list groups similar foods together, and defines serving sizes so that each of your meals will have the same amount of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. You can exchange food from one category with another in the same category in any given meal.

As you come up with meal plans, you’ll want your exchange list handy. You can then substitute an item in a particular group for another as you plan your meals and write your grocery list.
