Treating the Prescription Drug Addict

Treating drug addiction is a must for those that suffer from this debilitating problem. It’s paramount that people who suffer get the help that they rightly deserve. Experts all over the world have spent years learning how to treat the different levels of addiction. From chemical to substance abuse, there is nothing these counselors and doctors haven’t seen.

There is, though, one addiction that is increasing in frequency these days. That’s the addiction to prescription narcotics. With pharmaceuticals becoming a regular part of the chemicals we intake each and every day, it’s not hard to see why so many are afflicted with this disease. Still, the treatment for this addiction is a bit different than any other drug, so the patient must expect a slightly different path.

Many people who are dealing with prescription drug addiction are dealing with a unique addiction. In most cases, their prescription drug issue is tied into another psychological disorder. In most traditional rehab settings, the issue with drug addiction doesn’t accompany a psychological disorder. So the treatment is geared toward this addiction, and not geared toward fighting the mental illness.

This is why it is important to get a prescription drug addict the help they need to fight both diseases. A treatment center like the The Canyon offers patients who are in need a chance to treat both illnesses. It’s part of the dual dependency treatment program. There they will receive treatment separately for both their disorder as well as their addiction.

The Canyon, as seen on TheCyn.com, is one of the world’s leading treatment centers. It’s been the home to many high profile addicts as well as the normal men and woman who make up the bulk of their client base. It’s important for an addict to get treatment wherever they are, especially when fighting two life-altering issues like drug dependence and psychological disorders.

Heart attack is seen commonly nowadays among the elderly and occasionally even among the young people. This is largely due to the unhealthy lifestyles being followed by many people across the world. People no longer have to do works which require them to move their body around a lot and the food eaten are usually fast food or junk food.

Heart attack is a major killer today and its prevalence is only due to the reasons given above. Of course, psychological shocks can also contribute to giving a person a heart attack but it is not as a common reason as the unhealthy lifestyle. Psychological shocks refer to any unexpected but shocking incident, which can suddenly stop the flow of blood into your heart.

Heart attack occurs due to the cut of blood supply to the heart thereby making the muscles weak. By having an unhealthy lifestyle, you find that the heart weakens. High cholesterol food would lead to the deposition of fat in and around the wall of the arteries thereby disturbing the smooth flow of blood. Also, without regular exercise the heart won’t be strong enough to overcome the threats it has to face.

As you might know, regular workouts with a good lifestyle can keep you safe from any disease. In fact if you have regular exercise and yet unhealthy diets, your health risks can be reduced to limits, but keep in mind that it would be only to a limit. Instead, you can do a little compromise and have regular workouts, healthy food and occasional indulge in all the fast food or whatever it is you like that is unhealthy.

Finding time for workouts can be problem but try to make your body work as much as you can. It eliminates laziness and also keeps your mind more alert and active.

Drug Treatment Centers: Providing Hope for Substance Abuse

Few things in life are as frustrating as watching a loved one suffer from substance abuse. It’s hard to understand how they cannot see themselves as wonderful, beautiful, talented and loved. During this time it can be difficult to know how to help, what to do, what to say, and what not to say. Certainly, you have already taken the first step, which is to identify that there is a problem. To go hand in hand with that realization, the next step should be to enroll your loved one in one of the many drug treatment centers that are available.

It is absolutely essential to accept that neither you, nor your loved one, can, or should, attack this problem alone. There are so many factors involved with recovery and only qualified and experienced doctors, therapists and counselors, will adequately be able to cover them all and put your loved one on the path towards recovery. For example, not only must the physical addiction be considered, but the mental and emotional foundation that allowed the abuse to begin in the first place also must be addressed and resolved in order for complete healing to begin.

Of equal importance to finding help for your loved one is to also find support for yourself and the other members of your family that have been impacted by the substance abuse. It is helpful to think of the abuse as more of a cancer than a singular disease. It impacts not only the abuser, but also everyone around them. It infiltrates every aspect of your family and your life, and the negative effects this can have shouldn’t be trivialized. Most drug treatment centers will either provide resources for friends and family or will be able to direct you to support programs that best fit your situation.

Passive and Casual Smoking Leads to Genetic Changes

For years, medical personnel have urged people to avoid second-hand smoke. Exposure to tobacco smoke through passive smoking, or second-hand smoke, can significantly raise a person’s risk of developing lung diseases like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD, or cancer. A recent report in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine indicates that people who smoke casually or inhale the smoke of those around them are at much higher risks for health issues than people who aren’t exposed to smoke at all.

This study is the first of its kind to focus on what casual or passive smoking does to the human body at a genetic level. Dr. Ronald Crystal, Department of Genetic Medicine chair at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City and Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine head at New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell authored the study and believes that even minutely small levels of tobacco exposure can cause changes in genetic function within the respiratory system. Crystal also noted that genes that are normally active in people who regularly smoke may be seen both active and inactive in people with less exposure. While disease occurrence is much more likely in heavier smokers, casual and passive smokers will also suffer from illnesses related to exposure. Cells within the respiratory system are very responsive to smoke and any variation in the cell function results in the first signs of any number of lung diseases.

Scientists monitored over 120 subjects who either didn’t smoke at all, smoked just a little, or were habitual smokers. Chemical levels like nicotine and cotinine are indicators of cigarette smoking and can be found in urine; levels of these chemicals were used to determine what category subjects fell within. All subjects had genetic scans to determine which genes were active or sedentary within their respiratory systems. Scientists concluded that any level of nicotine or cotinine found within the body was directly related to genetic abnormalities. Crystal vehemently stated that this research indicates that no level of smoking, be it casual or passive, is safe.
